Shindyanchi Chhatri was built by Maratha noble Shri Mahadju Shinde at a place called Wanowri near Pune. The monument was originally constructed as an architectural masterpiece that also houses a Shiv Temple. The art work on the magnificent Chhatri is reminiscent of the Rajasthani crafts and architecture. Mahadju Shinde was a great man. His deeds of valor are still heard in Pune. He served as the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army under Peshwas for almost 20 years. He passed away the same year (1794), the Shiv Temple was built in the campus of the Chhatri. Many years later in 1965, the complex was completed by Madhavrao Scindia with a samadhi of the great warrior Mahadju Shinde inside it.

The memorial is a wonderful piece of art. The most intriguing fact about the Chhatri is that it still retains the newness and grace of the past era. It seems as if the monument has withstood the hard hits of time with great courage and persistence. Shindyanchi Chhatri is a must watch site in Pune especially for those who love watching old world archeological masterpieces.
