Situated in Maharashtra at a distance of approximately 128 km from the Pune city, Bhimashankar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva; one of the Hindu Trinity of Gods. This temple is considered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is believed that this place to be the resting point of Lord Shiva after the Tripurantaka samharam i.e., the obliteration of Rakshas Tripurasurag. It is also said that the Bhima River which is flowing near the Bhimshankar Jyotirlinga having a story behind its formation. As per the religious myth and scared anecdote, the sweat drops of Lord Shiva fell to the earth and got transformed into stream, which is at present known as the Bhima River. The lingam inside the temple is 1.5 feet in length. Goddess Kamalaja is also worshipped at the Bhimashankar temple,.

There is a Shiva Lingam enshrined inside the compound of the Bhimashankar Temple, which is approximately 1.5 feet in length. Besides the lingam, the temple also enshrines Goddess Kamalaja. The Goddess is worshipped by the devotees, with as much admiration as Lord Shiva. The whole myth associated with the temple goes somewhat like this. It is said that sovereign Kamrupeshwar, the king of Kamrup, was a very passionate devotee of Lord Shiva. One day, a devil appeared in his kingdom and started disturbing his regime.

That demon also tried to execute King Kamrupeshwar with his sword. Nevertheless, he missed the aim and the sword fell on the Shiva Lingam worshipped by the king. Immediately Lord Shiva appeared at the location and killed the demon. It is believed that after assassination of the demon, Lord Shiva’s sweat drops fell to the earth and were converted into a stream. The watercourse later got dtransformed into the Bhima River. Since the temple is positioned close to the river, so the temple also came to be known as the Bhimashankar Temple.

Today, devotees from all over the country visit this temple. The site is not only a popular pilgrimage centre for the Shiva devotees only, but also one of the most magnificent spots in the whole of Maharashtra. For the exciting activity with enthuse, Bhimshankar offers a number of outstanding trekking trails. There is also a wildlife sanctuary situated in its surrounding area, where tourist can hope to see a wide diversity of birds, animals, flowers, plants, etc. Bird lovers find this place almost a haven for birds.
