Situated in the Murud town of Maharashtra, Janjira Fort is the Island Fort which serves as one of the major attractions of the town. During the Siddi rulers of Janjira in the earlier times, Murud served as the erstwhile capital in past. Today, Janjira is considered amongst the few sea forts of India and lies 2 km inside the town. The huge fort is surrounded by walls that rise to a soaring height of 40 ft and being tied up by sea waves from all the sides, still keep their strength and magnificence. Earlier this fort had been attacked by a number of rulers.
Even, neither Shivaji, nor any of the Peshwas, could get success in capturing this fort and it remained unconquered for close to 350 years. Right from Marathas to the British as well as the Portuguese, no one was successful in annexing Murud Janjira Fort. The fort was not constantly as same as we see it today. It was originally a wooden structure, constructed by the fishermen of Murud, to serve as their fortification from the pirates of the sea. Later, the wooden construction was destroyed under the orders of Buran Khan, the minister of Nizamshah (the ruler of Ahmed Nagar).
Later, in place of that ruins, foundation of one of the most impregnable forts of India took place i.e. the Janjira Fort. Fort was beautified with a number of towers and turrets, which were mainly used for the purpose of keeping massive guns that could be used on the attacking enemy forces. At one end of time in its past, the fort was home to over 500 canons, out of which only a few are left today. Amongst these are Kalal Bangadi, Chavari and Landa Kasam canons. The further structures in Janjira Fort worth watching are two enormous water tanks, tombs, etc.
The main doorway of the Janjira Fort has a stone figurine, which portrays a single tiger that has been trapped by a six elephants. Some of the other attraction near by the place are- sweet water lake, the three burjs of the fort, Padmadurg Fort, Shrine of Dattatreya, Janjira Caves, Palace of the Nawab, etc. So, you must visit this place when you are in Pune, to make a sojourn at this splendid town.
