Lonavala is one of central India’s most popular hill resort and a favored summer retreat for the city dwellers. The hillock lies nestled in the Sahayadri ranges of Maharashtra at an altitude of 625 m above sea level. An easily accessible location, it is located at a distance of 96 km from Mumbai and 62 km Pune. Adventure enthusiasts also flock the hill station attracted by its excellent trekking routes and other opportunities. Located away from the dust and pollution of the cities and boasting of well developed tourist lodges and facilities, Lonavla serves as an ideal destination for people of all age groups.

The hill station derives its name from a Sanskrit word 'Lonavli', which means 'City surrounded by Caves'. During the course of its glorious history, the site used to serve as one of the important Buddhist centers in India. This is best apparent through the 2nd century caves at Bhaja and Karla and several other relatively modern shrines. The hill station was also part of several famous dynasties including empire of Chattrapati Shivaji, the Peshwa rules and the British rule.

One of its chief features is the pleasant season that lasts all through the year, although the period from October to May is regarded as the best. The monsoon season brings out a new and fresh facets of Lonavla beauty. Witness the entire valley covered in a green cloak with colorful rainbows serving as the perfect backdrop.

Its proximity to two of Maharashtra's main commercial cities (Mumbai and Pune) makes it easier to reach. One of the ‘must buys’ in the region is Chikki- a sweet jiggery made from peanuts, cashewnuts or sesame seeds. Several pleasant attractions enhance its beauty, and exploring the town is a fascinating discovery in itself. The Rajmachi Point, Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves, Shivaji Udyan, Tungarli Lake, Valvan Dam, Lonavla Lake, Lohagad Fort and Bhushi Dam comprise the list of famous tourist attractions in the valley.
