Mahabaleshwar is a vast green plateau, a sacred pilgrimage destination, rolling hills and excellent sightseeing locations all rolled into one. Located at a distance of 120 km from Pune, this vast plateau sprawling over 150 sq. km. experiences a climate that is neither too hot because of the heights nor too cold because of its nearness to the Arabian Sea.
This evergreen location with long winding roads, isolated foot paths and horse rides along the forest presents a memorable experience for the visitors. The hill station is blessed with an abundant variety of flora & fauna. Raspberries, strawberries and goose berries along with vegetables like french beans, red potatoes, salad, carrots, beets, and radishes are found throughout the juble of Mahbaleshwar that also houses several commercial as well as medicinal trees & plants. Panthers, jackals, foxes, wild boars, deers & bisons comprise the fauna.
The hill resort was originally developed by the British as a health resort. In 1791, Sir Charles Malet set foot on this magnificent highland followed by the construction of a sanitarium by Governor Sir John Malcolm in 1828. From 1834 to 1864, it was used as a jail for Chinese convicts with a capacity of 120 prisoners. These prisoners cultivated red potatoes, strawberries & weaving of cane & bamboo baskets and after their release, many of them stayed back permanently.
One of the largest hill stations in the state of Maharashtra, Mahabaleshwar means the ‘God of Great Power’, and has deep cultural and mythological connections with Lord Shiva. This is also due to the self-originated lingam enshrined at the Gokarna temple. This is considered to be the most sacred amongst the other twelve jyothirlingams.
