Rajgad literally means the ‘King of forts' and with its rich history, famous incidences having etched a place in the record books and huge size & architecture have all combined to present a standalone destination. It used to serve as the fort of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for quarter of a century witnessing several takeovers and ballets, and exists today recounting the tales and legends from the past.

The historical fort is located 40 km south-west from Pune. With a soaring height of 1350 m (4429 feet) above sea level, the fort dominates the whole region earning fame for its construction. It takes a stern climb upwards to reach to the fort, which houses some famous monuments like Sanjivani Machi, Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi and Bale killa which is regarded as the pride of Maharashtra.

The Padmavati Machi is Rajgad’s main place comprising of a temple, a lake and two houses. The ancient temple serve as a much needed respite for the trekkers. Some famous gates found at machi include ‘Chor Darawaja' and 'Pali Darwaja'. The Suvela Machi regarded as the strongest places inside the fort provides breathtaking vistas of the surroundings, which only a selected few get to see owing to the steep and difficult climb needed to get to it. The third machi- Sanjivani is also beautiful and visitors may undertake the 8 hr. trek from here leading up to Torana.

A special mention must be made about 'Bale killa' which at an altitude of 500 m is regarded as one of the best forts in Maharashtra. Some other famous forts & places located nearby that shall be visited include Mahabaleshwar, Raireshwar, Raigad, Pratapgad, Visapur and Sinhagad etc. All of the factors that one finds at Rajgad including natural settings, panoramic views of the valleys, the splendid architecture and Maratha valor still existing in its air makes this great fort a must see.
